Denton Gay | Theme: The Holy Grail of Writing | 3pm
Denton Gay earned a BA degree in Psychology from the University of Arkansas. He has also completed the INS, AIC, and CPCU programs from the American Insurance Institute. A frequent participant at writing conferences, he absorbs a lot of information by way of books and classes. His memberships include: the Ozark Writers League, the Oklahoma Writers Federation, the Northwest Arkansas Writers Workshop, and the Writers Guild of Northwest Arkansas. When not at his computer, he can be found playing on local rivers, lakes, and racquetball courts.
Gay’s publications include My Last Night As A Coyote (Voices Anthology 2010), Fatal Mistakes (2010), Tailspin (2010) and American Highway Roulette; Driving Risks and Consequences of Automobile Accidents.
Denton Gay will explain how theme can be used as a tool to determine character, plot, setting, structure, conflict, point of view, and symbolism. He will lead participants through the process of creating a great story by using a successful example to reveal the value of theme in each of these fiction elements. The audience will gain insight as to why some stories work so well, while others fall flat.

Connotations is nationally known in the student literary world, having garnered a total of 106 awards from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, National Scholastic Press Association (including induction into their Hall of Honor in 2005), the Southern Scholastic Press Association, the National Council of Teachers of English, and the Arkansas High School Press Association since its inception in 1988.
